![]() ![]() So, the problem is not my lens (at least my copy), the problem is that my camera's "phase detection" focus system is not properly calibrated.Īfter additional reading, this appears to be a very common issue with people buying a 1.4 lens: the depth of field is so small ("paper thin" as they say) that it will expose any camera focusing inaccuracy. I also took a few random shots in live view mode and they all were nice (not soft at all). I repeated the focus tests using "live view" mode and the front focus issue disappeared. Contrast detection: this method is used when you take a picture looking through the LCD (T2i's "live view" mode), and it is the same method used by any point&shot camera. Unfortunately, the only modern Canon model with focus micro-adjustment is the 7d (too expensive for a casual photographer like me) Focus is fast, but this method requires good calibration. Phase detection: this method is used when you take a picture looking through the visor (the reflex way). īasically, the T2i has two alternative focus methods: The explanations on this link helped me a lot understanding the problem. After this point, I thought the T2i was the culprit, and I was right. Initially I thought it was a lens problem (I almost returned it!), but then I repeated the test with my two other lenses (Tamron 18-250mm and Canon 1.8 50mm) and I got the same front focus result. I also performed some focus tests and noticed an obvious front focus issue. ![]() When I got this lens, I thought it was soft but I was wrong. I know this is an old therad (maybe you have returned already the lens :)) but I thought I would post to possibly help other people.Īre you sure the problem is the lens and not your camera? Have your tried focusing your T2i on live view mode?Īfter some testing/reading, I posted the following information on another forum (the "hot deals" forum were I found a good deal for this lens and where other people was also complaining about this type of issue. I also have a Canon T2i and just got the Sigma 30mm 1.4. But in case that doesn't work, how much would it cost to send my lens + camera to Sigma and have them repaired? Also, how long? I might try to file a complaint with eBay and see how that goes. It front-focuses severely with my 550D, totally unusable. ![]() Waited about 1 1/2 weeks and now they focus properly. In my case it was the Camera body which needed calibration so in my case I sent the body and the lens to the Canon service. My Sigma 17-50mm and Canon Nifty Fifty were back focusing. There are other lenses and products in the service waiting line. The calibration takes few hours but you have to wait 1-2 weeks due the service queue. Sent them (your cam & lens) to your local/nearest Sigma service for a calibration. And you benefit nothing complaining eBay and the seller: the seller sold you a good and working product which is just factory calibrated and therefore the combination of the lens and the camera body aren't compatible. ![]()
